Much like its namesake, the dark and twisted short stories in Kevin Brown's Death Roll collection sink their teeth into you and won't let go. I'm on my second read of this collection and I suspect it won't be my last. Brown covers the range of human emotions from fear, dread, revenge, love, and jealousy in a collection of stories that come highly recommended. Don't let this book pass you by.

memory of who she is or where she was. The rich man keeps practice to protect his property from all the unusal antics
greedy people will play. But is she really a fake? Soft-boil
heating going on. Really well written, great characters,
terrific ending.

Third and best of the Triple Trouble series.

Fallon is the third triplet in this series - albeit the firstborn (by several minutes). Since their twenty fifth birthday last summer, both Kayla and Elissa (twice) have married; now the three of them are planning a Christmas resort vacation over Christmas on St Alicia island in the Caribbean. The school where Fallon is a teacher has closed for the Christmas vacation, so she decides to go to the island early and relax. A very active person, she quickly becomes bored. Then, while relaxing on the beach, she spots a bottle floating in the water in front of her. When she picks it up, she is surprised to find a note in it - from a lonely little girl. She decides to try to find the little girl; she is obviously on the island, since she has drawn a map showing her location on the back of the note. Her inquiries at the resort provide no real help - the staff are very aware of the location, the owner of their chain of hotels lives there - but they have no knowledge of a little girl.
She decides to walk to the location the next morning in an effort to find the little girl.
This is my favorite of the Triple Trouble series. It is a reissue, but reflects Susan Mallery's touch in the writing, the characters, and the mix of mystery, romance, and humor. Be prepared for one of the bet Christmases of your life!

I have enjoyed every one of the Mallery books I have read, and this is as great as I expected it to be. Each of Mallery's books has a great story featuring people that have challenges to overcome, as well as just a bit of sex which makes you want to pick up the book as soon as you can throughout the day as well as right after dinner!

Austin M. Busch is Associate Professor of Early World Literatures in the Department of English at the State University of New York College at Brockport. His articles have appeared in the Journal of Biblical Literature, Biblical Interpretation, and The Classical Journal, and he is a contributing author of Seneca and the Self (Cambridge University Press). He is an editor of the Norton Critical Edition of The English Bible, King James Version: The New Testament and The Apocrypha.

Slip

This edition is beyond praise, the whole thing is invaluable. My growse is about something not ultimately important, just irritating. Elsewhere I have complained that these books are only available in paperback, which makes temporary economic sense, but not for a lifetime's study. It is worth adding here that the "slipcover" to the two volumes -- shown in the picture above -- is just thick paper, not remotely sturdy, and cheap. It is unfathomable to me that Norton would spend all that money on such a brilliant enterprise and not showcase it properly.

Excellent scholarship

This is a huge step in the direction toward an appreciation of The Bible as a literary anthology. The editorial notes and additional primary source materials are wonderful. The Norton Edition of The Bible will no doubt be the essential edition for new scholarship.

Norton Critical Edition of King James Version--a bargain!

Two-volume set is a bargain at $40.95 and free postage. I have read "Backgrounds" and "Exegesis" of New Testament, which I found dry and hard-going. I will enjoy "Poetic Reimaginings" more--I've taught most of them. I expect to find "Case Studies" and "Translation of 1 Corinthians 13" engaging. I haven't yet approached critical background on Old Testament.

I have read Luther's German Bible twice, Geneva Bible once, and King James Version twice. It's possible to read each one through in a year by reading 3 chapters a day from January through November and leaving Psalms until December. (I'm working on the Douai-Rheims Bible, which is hard to read within a year. It has 14 books or parts of books from the Old Testament, surviving in Greek not Hebrew and thus Deutero-canonical.)

Inspiration!

I'd never heard of Sam Cawthorn before a newspaper article caught my eye and it prompted me to buy his book - what an incredible man! Sam displays a resilience I've rarely seen - I'm a Nurse of 25 years and his grit and determination is rare. I can only wish more Australians and beyond also find this book. Applying any of the ideas on "bounce" will have you succeed - just Sam's story was enough to help me through a very difficult time at work. I love to read inspiring true stories especially when the person is not well known -but this one stopped me in my tracks - I think Sam should be Prime Minister of our country!

One of the most inspiring authors

The idea of bouncing forward frightens me a little if only because it's unchartered territory. Author Sam Cawthorn is there to assist. He went through wretched pain and tragedy, recognized his predicament, and acted strongly in a way that helps others.

Cawthorn is more than inspiring. He sets forth principles for living, especially for when the going is toughest.

This Book Will Revive You

As you can see in other reviews this man was living a very 'nice' life when something happened: he fell asleep at the wheel and got into a terrible car accident. His right arm was torn off and his other injuries will make you cringe. This hits home because my sister was severely injured in a car crash and I find myself tired driving too/from work. He could have done what other people do: sit home, collect disability, watch TV, eat frozen meals and wait until his family got home. But he didn't. He chose to live. This book will inspire you to do the same.

The book is written in such as way that you can't help but think, "If this man can do all of this, why can't I do it too?? I may have some pain and issues but they're NOTHING compare to what Sam Cawthorn went through!"

I highly recommend this book to anyone who feels hopeless, depressed and discouraged. Heck, I suggest it to anyone!

About the Author
Dr. Keith Folse is a Professor of TESOL at the University of Central Florida. He is the author of 57 textbooks on a variety of subjects from grammar to vocabulary to composition, including five best-selling books in the Great Writing series by National Geographic Learning.

Finally!

Since I began teaching my TESOL program's required grammar course in 2000, I have been using the text widely considered to be the `bible' for future ESL teachers. I continued to adopt this text even though I was never entirely satisfied with it and even though my students found it too dense. That was until I found Keith Folse's "Keys to Teaching Grammar to English Language Learners: A Practical Handbook." My program is predominately one that trains teachers; rarely does someone in my program go on for another more advanced degree, so when I saw the Folse text, I knew I had found something that would finally answer my students' questions in language that was neither too dense nor too technical. The book is lively, enlightening, and contains exactly what ESL teachers need - the 15 most troublesome grammar mistakes, who makes which errors and why, and techniques for teaching grammar to English language learners. Eureka!

Very useful for an ESL/EFL teacher

I met Dr. Folse for the first time in South Korea at the KOTESOL Conference (ESL conference in Korea). I teach English as a Foreign Language to South Koreans at a university, and I have my M.A. from West Virginia University. I have another grammar book called "The Grammar Book". I find that book very useful, but I also love this book by Folse because it's more focused on looking at grammar for teaching for purpose. I would say that the advantage of using Folse's book is that if you're pressed for time and need to quickly know the key points and problem areas without being bogged down with too many examples and explanations, then this is your book. It does give examples after certain points are made. That's very vital. That's why I think that the Oxford book I use to teach English is very horrible. It doesn't use simple language that's good for EFL learners and doesn't use examples after making a point. In conclusion, I highly recommend this book.

Very good, realistic story of loving couple exploring control and submission.

I'm not normally a lover of FemDomme stories, most I find are harsh, have sadistic and vindictive female characters I loathe, and the males can be so pathetic as masochistic subs.
So...how different and what a lovely surprise this was.

This is about Laci and her husband Cole, long time married, who find themselves with an empty nest when their son leaves for uni. Having experienced this time in my life, and so will many others who read this; it is usually a time when many marriages can and do hit the rocks...but not Laci and Cole. Laci begins to acknowledge her dominant side, her need for control and begins to explore and experiment on and with Cole. Cole is very much the man, but his love is for Laci and seeing her happy and in control he finds excites him sexually too, though at times with trepidation.

I love the fact you get both characters points of view. I also love this very real feel to the story and events therein. I can see this happening...and see many wishing they were as these two at play...though in whatever role suits each individual.

This story has realism, has humour, shows Laci a character who needs control, but also shows her underlying insecurities, shows courage and has ingenious ideas for sex play that many will probably want to try out variations on a theme for themselves, shows a couple who continue to develop their sex life and are not afraid to explore, saying yes, but equally can say no.

I enjoyed this debut novel by Donna Jay...and would be happy to read more of this couple, especially areas hinted at with prostate stimulation. Cole's response was so spot on (excuse the pun) for most males...until they try it!

Mature couple gets their sexy on

This is a fun and sexy story of a mature married couple who are still hot for each other. They decide to stretch their wings, so to speak, when their son goes off to college, leaving them empty nesters. Laci has always had a bit of a dominant streak and decides she wants to explore that more with her loving husband. Cole is just a bit hesitant at first, but realizes he can relax with Laci--she would never hurt him--and finds that her dominance turns him on, as well!

This story details their experimentation and the feelings it brings up in both of them. This is not a deep, angsty story full of drama and conflict. Instead, it shows the trust and love this couple feels for each other and how the switch up enhances their sex life. The sexy scenes are hot and the flashes of humor increase the fun. I enjoyed Laci and her antics, and I really loved Cole. He is all male, not the least bit a doormat. Laci's dominance does not emasculate him. Instead, submitting to her shows how confidant in his own masculinity and how strong his bond is with his wife.

This is a D/s story without cruelty or darkness. It would appeal not only to those interested in the femdom genre, but to anyone who enjoys a good romance.

sexy and witty

There were so many things I enjoyed about Laci and Cole’s story. Working in a mostly male dominated industry for most of my life, I was able to connect with Laci instantly. Cole was sexy, funny, and I loved how he was down for (almost) everything Laci surprised him with.
While I’m definitely a fan of broody darkness and tormented characters, I didn’t miss that sort of angst one bit in this story. It had so many other wonderful emotional aspects to hold my interest in every chapter. It’s so refreshing to read about characters 30+, especially a warm loving couple like Laci & Cole. I loved how they weren’t billionaires or magazine models; just a real, normal couple looking to spice things up in their love life. I really enjoyed the witty banter between the two, and every sentence was smart and well thought out.
This new author has brought a wonderful story to the femdom world; one that's believable, sexy and heartwarming all at the same time. I would recommend this book to anyone looking to dip their toes into the lighter side of BDSM, a female-led relationship or just looking for a hot and steamy read that’s fun and different, and I look forward to reading more!

About the Author
Zvi Bodie is Professor of Finance and Economics at the Boston University School of Management. He is the director of Boston University’s Chartered Financial Analysts Examination Review Program and has served as consultant to many private and governmental organizations. Professor Bodie is a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research, where he was director of the NBER Project on Financial Aspects of the U.S. Pension System, and he is a member of the Pension Research Council of The Wharton School. He is widely published in leading professional journals, and his previous books include Pensions in the U.S. Economy, Issues in Pension Economics, and Financial Aspects of the U.S. Pension System.

Alex Kane is professor of finance and economics at the Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies at the University of California, San Diego. He was visiting professor at the Faculty of Economics, University of Tokyo; Graduate School of Business, Harvard; Kennedy School of Government, Harvard; and research associate, National Bureau of Economic Research. An author of many articles in finance and management journals, Professor Kane’s research is mainly in corporate finance, portfolio management, and capital markets, most recently in the measurement of market volatility and the pricing of options. Professor Kane is the developer of the International Simulation Laboratory (ISL) for training and experimental research in executive decision making.

Alan Marcus is professor of finance in the Wallace E. Carroll School of Management at Boston College. He received his PHD in Economics from MIT in 1981. Professor Marcus recently has been a visiting professor at the Athens Laboratory of Business Administration and at MIT’s Sloan School of Management and has served as a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. He also established the Chartered Financial Analysts Review Program at Boston College. Professor Marcus has published widely in the fields of capital markets and portfolio management, with an emphasis on applications of futures and options pricing models. His consulting work has ranged from new product development to provision of expert testimony in utility rate proceedings. He also spend two years at the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation (Freddie Mac), where he developed models of mortgage pricing and credit risk, and he currently serves on the Advisory Council for the Currency Risk Management Alliance of State Street Bank and Windham Capital Management Boston.

Bozos and the market

This review has 3 purposes:

1. This is a great book for learning about investments. I read somewhere that this book teaches you about investments "without the math". There is math in this book. If you want a "math lite" reference, try one of the Dummies, Idiots or Totally Confused series.

2. This book is on the syllabus for a professional exam (CAS); however, the CAS syllabus specifies a 2008 printing. This book shows a 2006 printing, but when it arrived, it was the 2008 version of the 7th edition. I don't know if there was a 2006 printing or if Amazon just has it wrong.

3. Finally, this review is to offset the two bozos who left reviews before me. THIS IS NOT HOW YOU CONTACT CUSTOMER SERVICE! This is a forum to let other interested parties know what you thought of the text. If you can't figure that out, you probably won't be able to understand what the text is talking about anyway. (See note 1.)

Good Mainstream Investments Textbook

It is refreshing to see a chapter devoted to criticisms of the efficient market hypothesis, though a further discussion of behavioral finance would be greatly welcomed. This book is concise and provides a good balance of theory and practical knowledge.

About the Author
A curator for more than twenty years at Historic New England, NANCY CARLISLE works with some of the most important historic kitchens in the country and has written and lectured widely on the material culture of domestic life. MELINDA TALBOT NASARDINOV, a former assistant curator at Historic New England, is a graduate of the Winterthur Program in Early American Culture and writes about American decorative arts and the history of domestic life.

Great gift for a cook OR a history buff!

This is a beautifully illustrated and well researched book that will appeal to many different audiences. I think it would be a great gift for a cook with too many cookbooks, or any fan of American history, particularly women's history. I also think it would be great for a school library, since kids just love to write papers and projects on topics like these (e.g. what did the colonists really eat?). While the book is written for adults and includes scholarly citations, the writing style is accessible enough for older children.

The book has seven chapters:
1) The kitchen in American life
2) The New England hearth 1720-1840
3) Kitchens in the plantation south 1830-1860
4) Cookstoves and servants 1850-1890
5) Kitchens along the Rio Grande 1821-1912
6) Towards the modern kitchen 1890-1945
7) The Postwar kitchen 1945-present

Thus the book moves through time and place in a very engaging way. The book is fully illustrated; a picture on nearly every page. It's the kind of book you could read cover-to-cover or just flip through and read a page here and there, and enjoy it both ways.

As a food fan myself, this book made me reflect. A lot of us foodies are so enthusiastic nowadays about "slow" and authentic food, and so against processed and prepared foods. Yet this book showed how preparing, cooking, and preserving food often dominated literally every minute of women's lives. For example, "by some estimates, women may have spent as much as six to eight hours a day grinding corn and another two or three hours making tortillas" (p. 111). Wow. Even the most dedicated foodie doesn't want to spend 10 hours a day making the same thing, every single day. Made me appreciate technology in and out of the kitchen much more. And it also made me realize why, for example, my grandmother was big into canned and frozen foods. What a relief it must have seemed after watching her own mother and grandmother work this much.

A fascinating and wonderfully illustrated book about the most popular room in the house

I've written about kitchens for Taunton Press and I'm always on the lookout for books about the history of kitchen design. I checked this out from my fantastic local library, but I'm very definitely going to purchase it, as it belongs in my personal library. This book contains a nice mix of academic research and original sources. It is stuffed full of photos, illustrations and quotes from original texts from all eras. And it has an incredible, huge bibliography, including a reference to some fascinating and comprehensive online sources. History buffs, designers, and cooks of all ages should enjoy seeing what Americans have considered ideal for kitchen design over our 200-plus year history.
