An excelent work on law sociology.

The autor have done a very clear presentation of the construction of fields (a Pierre Bourdieu's concept) in law legitimation and social creation of power. Tis book isn't only an important work on international arbitration but a fundamental reading to all that would like to understand law and society. The history of international arbitration field on ICC and other institutions, illustrated by several examples, is, perhaps, the best way to undersatnd how and why the international ADR have developed and works.

Cinderella with a twist

Selena Gates just wants to make it to the next rodeo, the next chance for a payday that will keep her, her aging trailer, and her aging barrel pony on the road for another chance. When her friend suggests she marry a millionaire, Selena laughs. A miracle would be easier--millionaires don't go for women without curves. Selena's hopes seem shattered when she runs into a car--and meets handsome Leo Calvani--the Italian farmer who just happens to be a super-rich aristocrat. Leo keeps his personal history a secret when he discovers that Selena has strong class prejudices. She distrusts the rich and is absolutely fearful of the titled aristocracy.
The two find the attraction overwhelming and Selena, after a series of rodeo successes made possible by Leo's secret financing of a new trailer and a new horse, visits him in Italy. She is shocked to discover that he is rich--and hobnobs with the titled of Italy. Still, he is a farmer at heart and she consoles herself with that when he asks her to marry him. But when she learns that he is to be the heir to the Venetian palace and the title of Count, she draws the line.
Author Lucy Gordon tells a Cinderella tale with a twist--this Cinderella doesn't want a prince. She wants a horse. Failing a horse, a farmer would do. Gordon's strong writing sustains reader interest despite her limited explanation of exactly what made these two people right for each other. American readers are likely to find Selena unconvincing as a fellow American. Her diction is ever-so-British (no American would ever wear a bathing costume), and her anti-aristocratic reverse snobbery is unknown in the states (we don't have enough contact with the aristocrats to have any negative feelings about them). Even lacking this, Selena is annoying with her willingness to assume that everyone thinks the worst about her, and to blame others for her problems (she was the one who ran into Leo's car but she failed to take responsibility for following too closely).
It's a challenge to combine an independent heroine with a care-giving and wealthy hero. Gordon makes a valiant attempt and THE TUSCAN TYCOON'S WIFE makes for a mostly enjoyable read.

Loved it!

Selena is a gutsy cowgirl who's led a rough and nomadic lifestyle. She's alone in the world with the exception of Elliot, her old horse that she considers her only family. Selena has never loved anyone and no one has ever loved her. She's not used to love and tenderness from anyone.
Then she meets Italian tycoon, Leo Calvani. He's a kind hearted, gentle, and generous soul. He's like no man she's ever met before and her world changes. They fall in love.
Selena thinks that Leo's poor and struggling like her. When she finds out otherwise, she has to make the decision of whether she can stay with Leo and be happy.
What a wonderful story of two people from different worlds, brought together by love and how one of them has to learn to accept that love. The last few pages brought tears to my eyes.
As usual, all the characters in Gordon's book are captivating. I liked Liza, the woman responsible for helping Selena find her unfamiliar way in the world of love. She has a unique story of her own, as well.
You'll get caught up in the moving story of Selena and Leo when you read THE TUSCAN TYCOON'S WIFE by Lucy Gordon.

Italian Dream Come True

Selena Gates was used to tackling life on her own, along with an aging car, crusty trailer, and Elliot, her old faithful horse. She thought that handsome Leo Calvani was a simple man, living a quiet, secluded life in Italy. Intrigued and with a blossoming love in her heart, Selena followed Leo home and discovered he wasn't who she thought he was!

Leo fit into his family's opulent life in Venice like he was wearing an expensive leather glove. Selena, however, didn't belong in Leo's new world, no matter how much she cared for him. Moving among the nobility made Selena uncomfortable and with regret, she realized that loving Leo might not be enough. How can they find a solution to this insurmountable problem? Enjoy this contemporary romance set in both America and Italy as two people from different worlds learn to love and cherish each other for what is the best in both of them.

About the Author
Professor Enrico Drioli has been working in Membrane Science and Membrane Engineering for many years, beginning as a student in Chemistry at the University of Naples. He is a Full Professor at the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials at the University of Calabria, where he founded the Institute of Membrane Technology of the Italian Research Council in 1993. He served there as Director until December 2008. He also served as Dean of the School of Engineering at the University of Calabria from 1982 to 1985.

His scientific activity has focused mainly on the following fields: Membrane Science and Engineering, Membranes in Artificial Organs, Integrated Membrane Processes, Membrane Preparation and Transport Phenomena in Membranes, Membrane Distillation and Membrane Contactors, and Catalytic Membrane and Catalytic Membrane Reactors.

He is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including:

Doctorate Honoris Causa from University of Paul Sabatier of Toulouse (France) (8 July 2009); International Cooperation Honor Award, September 2005, given by the Membrane Industry Association of China (MIAC) for his special dedication to the International Cooperation between China and Europe in the field of membrane and science technology; President of the European Society of Membrane Science and Technology (today European Membrane Society) (1982 - 1998); Member of the International Scientific Advisory Committee of the Grand Water Research Institute at Technion - Israel Institute of Technology, Israel (since 2004); Member and Moderator of the Research Advisory Council of the Middle East Desalination Research Center Oman, Muscat (since May 1997); Member of the International Advisory Board of the State Key Laboratory of Catalysis, Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (since 2007); Founding member of the European Federation on Regenerative Medicine (since 2006); Expert on the panels of the OECD project “Nanotechnology and clean water” (www.oecd.org/sti/nano).

He is also the author of more 530 scientific papers, 18 patents in the field of Membrane Science and Technology, and 10 scientific books .

About the Author
Atulya Mahajan is the author of amreekandesi.com, a popular Indian satire blog. Born and raised in Delhi, he moved to the US in 2004 for his Masters and stayed on for five years before returning to India, in a Swades-inspired moment. During his time in the US, he started his blog to chronicle the lives of Indians living abroad, and this book is the culmination of that vision. He also writes occasional humour columns for the Times of India, Crest Edition. Ever since he returned to India, Atulya has spent thousands of hours shouting at random taxi drivers and motorcyclists who overtake from the wrong side. If you want to see him convert into the Hulk, just honk at him at a red light. When not busy writing hilarious pieces, Atulya works at an investment bank as a technologist. He claims to be the first man ever to have 24-pack abs, and has reportedly tried about 485 remedies to stop hairfall, though none of them seem to have worked.

Had potential...

Going to America for studies and jobs and settling down there is the dream of millions of Indian youth. For them America is the country of hopes and opportunities. Akhil Arora is one such Indian soul hailing from Delhi. While on one hand, he cannot wait to get away from home on the other hand he dreams of returning to India to do his country some good. He is the `Swades' boy. Jaspreet Singh is yet another Indian soul from a village in Punjab who wishes to go to America. His aspirations are however different from Akhil's as he dreams of a life right out of American pie. After working odd jobs for a year, when he is accepted in an American university, Akil and Jaspreet find themselves as roommates.

First comes what I did like about this book. The novel deals with the difference between our dreams and the facts of life there and how these two boys, who are poles apart, deal with it. Also, it touches the subjects of parental pressures, personal ambitions and racism even though they fail to make an overall impact. I also, like the author's witty/humorous take that did make me laugh out once in a while.

What I didn't like is that this novel managed to stereotype people in the most practised manner. I know it's the way of life for us Indians, but it is also one habit that we seriously need to break. Stereotyping people, with no matter what intentions, when you are reaching out to million is one habit that our authors and filmmakers need to break out of. Also, sex! Yes we know all the boys are driven by only hormones - no need to point it out to us again and again all the while objectifying the women around them. Jassi's fixation on `Pamelaji' is simply crazy.

A promising outline, but commercializing the product took the good parts out of the book. While the issues could have been outlined better, selling the book through sex spoiled it for me.

Nostalgic. Feels the pulse of an Indian immigrant student.

Amreekandesi: Masters of AmericaHave been following Amreekandesi's blog for a long time. I like his sarcasm and satire in his blogs and one liners on his twitter account.
This book started with a heavy dose of it, BUT stay with it, and eventually the story unfolds beautifully.

The journey, the fobbygiri, the motivations for the protagonists' behavior are very genuine yet surprising.
Many mini episodes of the characters interacting with new world people (Douglasji, Mindyji, Subwaywali ji, etc. ) are rib tickling and you can't help but laugh at us Inidans more.
Trust me, this story has some intimate scenes which are handled so beautifully, you can read this to your 5 year old children.
It is also a good eye opener for students aspiring to come to USA.

Author does indulge in satire at lengths sometimes. But For such a good story-line, I think that can be overlooked.
Also, the author seems to have put some Easter eggs through out the book. (e.g. Capital Rs in Chapter titles). Hope he gets enough requests to reveal the purpose of those.

All in all a very nice read. Go ahead buy this book.
You will end this book with a wide grin across your face.

Sylvia Lieberman ( Grandma Sylvia ) is a native New Yorker who has long been devoted to nurturing and educating children. Jeremy Wendell earned his B.F.A in Fine Arts from Ohio State University in 2006. Archibald is his first publication as an illustrator. He lives in Ohio with his wife Kristin.

A VERY SPECIAL BOOK

Every so often you run across a book, either an "adult" book or a children's book which, after reading the first couple of pages, you come to the realization that you have come across something different, something quite special! Archibald's Swiss Cheese Mountain by Sylvia Lieberman and illustrated by Jeremy Wendell is one of those special books! I cannot remember when I have been so delighted with an original work such as this one! There is something quite special about this story, and the so very many lessons to learn from reading it.

Archibald is a young mouse who lives with is family in Mr. Hochmeyer's General Store. Archibald is a young mouse and is learning about life; is wanting to spread his wings, so to speak, and is filled with the want, wonder, need and hunger for adventure that most young people (a mouse in this case) are naturally filled with at that age. Archibald is lucky, he has a mother that is filled with wisdom and does not mind sharing it. "Measure with your whiskers," Momma Mouse repeated. They are the width of your body. If your whiskers fit, so will the rest of you, my son," and "things within such an easy reach aren't always most desirable," are but two examples.

This entire story is based on Archibald's adventures in Mr. Hochmeyer's store. It is a story of adventure, discovery of his physical surroundings and indeed, discovery of himself as a mouse. Our little furry friend is, for the most part, driven by a preoccupation for food...what youngster isn't driven by this? Or is this just an excuse to do what comes naturally for the young and young at heart, exploration of their physical limitations and to experience life on their own and to its fullest? I have my own suspicions, but each reader can make their own mind up about this. Anyway, throughout his adventures, momma's wisdom and advice is always with him.

This story hit rather close to home for me. My mother was much like Archibald's mother in that she was full of wisdom and good advice. And like Archibald's mother, she was wise enough to know that I had to experience life on my own, to have my own adventures and that you can give a child all the advice you want, but the child is going to test their limits anyway. "Smother the boy and spoil the man," was one of my mother's little sayings. I could relate to this little mouse as he and I had and have many of the same characteristics. The author has wonderful insight into a child's mind!

The story is very well written and Mrs. Lieberman has used a lyrical style that is absolutely captivating. The story flows in a way that makes the entire work a true page turner. Hidden within the prose is all kinds of good advice, some quite obvious, some not, but nevertheless, all sound and all good. Over and over again the author stresses that that there will be obstacles in life, indeed fears of the unknown, but that these little bumps can be overcome. The story is about hunger, not only physical hunger, but intellectual hunger, and is told at a level that children will fully understand. The author seems to have the ability to put these points across in a very enjoyable and fascinating manner.

The art work in this books is great and in many ways rather unique. The artist, Jeremy has used what I call a slap-dash method of mellow but bright colors and has paid very close attention to detail. A cookie is filled with chocolate chips, a Swiss cheese is filled with holes, a can of beans is labeled a can of beans. Facial expressions on our hero and the other mice, people and critters (a large orange cat with green eyes) fit the situation perfectly. The art work goes perfectly with the well written text. The illustrator has captured the spirit of the story perfectly.

This is a perfect read-a-long book. The story is great, the text is quite readable and the pictures quite eye catching. As with most children's books I review, I gave this one a "kid test." It was read to two second grade classes and one first grade class. The book was an absolute hit and I was asked for second readings, and indeed, in one class, a third!

The book is will constructed and should be able to survive the handling of many little hands. The paper is of excellent quality and the print style is very easy on the eyes. The size of the book makes it perfect for group readings, or if one on one, fits perfectly in your lap along with the kid. The reading level on this work is designated at between ages 4 and 8, which I feel is about right.

Recommend this one highly. Do your child a favor and get this one for her or him. Do your self a favor and read it along with the child!

Hurrah for Archibald

Forget Mickey Mouse, welcome to the world of Archibald, an adorable mouse with a big heart and a grand sense of adventure. Archibald is finally big enough to go into the world alone and find his own food. Mother has taught him to never enter a opening unless his whiskers fit, "If your whiskers fit, so will the rest of you, my son."

Archibald soon learns that being on his own can be scary. When he discovers Swiss Cheese Mountain, he knows this will feed him for a very long time. But tackling Swiss Cheese Mountain is just the beginning of his troubles!

Archibald is so cute and curious, children will enjoy reading of his adventures. The illustrations are wonderful and they really depict the true nature of this special little mouse.

Archibald - the next greatest thing

Archibald is adorable! Kids will love him in this, his first adventure. He's young, sweet, innocent and curious about the world around him - just like you! This is a book that kids will want to read, and have read to them, over and over. The illustrations are especially sweet, really conveying the cuteness of this mouse. Whoever this illustrator is will go far! My kids and I loved everything about this book. Highly recommended.
