Shadow of Paradise ( Sombra del Paraiso ) is the first complete bilingual edition of this volume of poems by Nobel Prize-winning Spaniard Aleixandre (1898-1984). First published in 1944, it is an intensely visionary collection in which Aleixandre journeys "toward a promised world half seen," charting the geography of a mystical Eden (based on the city of Malaga) perhaps not so beautifully realized since Coleridge's "Kubla Khan." These imagined Iberian scenes appear "transformed into light,/ transformed into flame that flashes in the air." Things Unsaid

While reading Stephen Kessler's bilingual translation of Cernuda's last two books, named after the last book, Desolation of the Chimera (1962), I discovered that Vincente Aleixandre was also a member of the Generation of '27 (along with Cernuda, Guillen and Garcia Lorca). As it happened, I had a bilingual copy of Aleixandre's Shadow of Paradise (1944), given to me by my friend, the translator Hugh Harter. The book has the excitement of a transitional, mannerist work--in many senses. Primarily, the author seemed to be moving from a vivid, youthful surrealism to something different, more plain spoken, but still ecstatically wrapped in the imagery of surrealism. There's also the issue of timing with three gay members of '27: Garcia Lorca was killed in the early days of the Civil War. Cernuda went into exile and spent the rest of his life in the US and Mexico. Aleixandre stayed in Spain. I imagine certain adjustments in style had to be made for a gay man to live in Franco's Spain and, to me, that becomes the ever-present thing unsaid in Aleixandre's Shadow of Paradise. My only quibble with my friend's translations is that they depend so heavily on Latin cognates. Spanish comes by its Latin vocabulary quite naturally; but a preponderance of Latin in English poetry is endemic to 19th century Romanticism, perhaps giving the wrong signal. Leaning more toward Anglo-Saxon vocabulary would restore the hard-edged freshness to this volatile and vital poetry.

Love his voice and perceptions. Sometimes a little lush for some people but it suits me fine. If you need a respite from the garbage in the media try this book. The images will take you completely out of this world.

The definitive resource for clicker training

After reading the reviews of this book and the similar Clicker Training for Cats by Karen Pryor, I purchased both so that I could compare them and possibly benefit from two different sources. However, after reading both manuals and having been clicker training my cat for several months now, I can say with absolute certainty that Cat Training in 10 Minutes is far superior in quality and content to Karen Pryor's book.

1. Comprehensiveness of Clicker Theory: 5/5 stars. The theory used in Cat Training in 10 Minutes is operant conditioning. Using a clicker followed by a reward, you can reinforce desired behavior in your cat. Verbal commands (come, sit) as well as specific hand signals are incorporated in this book. I find the hand signals to be just as essential as the verbal commands: upon seeing the signal, my cat immediately knows which action she is to perform and will begin to do it even before I give the verbal command.

2. Accessibility: 5/5 stars. Cat Training in 10 Minutes is written in easy-to-follow expository style, with occasional narrative anecdotes. It has color photos on every page depicting the specific command/action, how to signal with your hand, and how your cat will likely react. The instructions are clearly numbered and succinct.

3. Organization: 5/5 stars. The first chapter is an introduction that discusses the theory behind clicker training and the tools you'll need. Each following chapter covers one specific command/type of behavior, and the chapters are arranged from easy to hard. There are a few "bonus" chapters at the end of the book that discuss cats in our lives, correcting bad behavior, and professional/movie industry cat trainers. I was pleasantly surprised by this last chapter: it was an enjoyable read and informative to boot.

4. Correcting Undesirable Behavior: 2/5 stars. In this book's sole weak spot, the author discusses only furniture scratching, inconsistent litter box use, and walking on countertops. Despite this chapter's short length, I personally found it to be more helpful than its counterpart in Ms. Pryor's book. Why? Because Cat Training in 10 Minutes actually lists specific instructions for correcting bad behavior using a clicker. I've implemented some of these tactics, especially regarding furniture scratching, with my own cat and have had great success.

5. Helpful/Extra Features: 5/5 stars. First, the author's short anecdotes are contained in colorful call-out boxes along the side of the page, which lends a nice organizational layout to the text and keeps the instructional body uncluttered. Second, and perhaps more importantly, the book has several appendices (hand signals, adoption/rescue resources) and an alphabetical index.

In summary, I highly recommend Cat Training in 10 Minutes to anyone looking to clicker train their cat, as its quality and content are head-and-shoulders above Karen Pryor's book. Good luck, and here's to your cat learning some great new tricks!

Valuable Training

I used this book to clicker train my Ragdoll cat since he was a kitten and I did not have to starve my cat as one reviewer feared nor is this torture. My cat LOVES training! Because the book taught me to announce the beginning and end of our session my cat now perks up whenever I say "Training", it has allowed us to create a closer bond with unforeseen benefits. Once Tyler got his head stuck inside the corded handle of a paper bag becoming alarmed and running around the room trying to shake it off. I yelled "Sit!" (The first command I taught him) and to my astonishment he sat allowing me to come over and remove the bag. I would later discover that Tyler responds to either voice commands or hand signals alone even though I had used combined signal/commands in the beginning. I'm now teaching my cat to go to a specific location should I find him somewhere I don't think he should be by pointing and saying "Touch". It's working!
So let me just say that I love love love my cat and would never do anything to hurt him. If anything I believe that operant conditioning / clicker training has brought me closer to my friend as well as allowing me to have a modicum of control desired in a home environment. I never have to yell or use negative commands (cats don't respond like dogs) but instead now have several positive commands that are part of my tool kit. I believe that the training instruction in this book is valuable and recommend it highly.

Excellent guide to cat training

I was quite skeptical about the idea of training a cat to do anything. Cats are highly intelligent but not interested in pleasing us the way dogs are. In addition, my cat has cerebellar hypoplasia and is challenged in terms of general mobility. The trick shown on the cover of this book seemed far beyond his capabilities. I decided to spend a few minutes before feeding times just teaching him what the clicker was and perhaps to come when called. I was shocked to find that Nugget loves his training sessions and will follow me around the house imploring me to get out the clicker when his normal training times are getting close. Forget trying to skip a session! Nugget has become far more interactive with us and confident in his own ability to move around. While he still is unable to jump vertically, he now has learned to use his step ladder to get into chairs and on the bed. You can see the contentment in his entire body when he is able to use a previously inaccessible sleeping place or window. Also, Nugget actually is able to "jump" from chair to chair as shown on the cover of the book. We set him up for success, but still he has exceeded our expectations and his as well. I completely recommend "Cat Training in 10 Minutes". We have had wonderful results following the simple, well-illustrated instructions. It's definitely worth training your cat, and this book will tell you how to do it.

Interesting read with practical advice.

This book is a great read if you are looking to find out more about using various psychology techniques to advance your career, better your relationship or in general influence people. I was a psych major in undergrad and I do remember a lot of the principles mentioned in this book. One thing that I did not know a lot about is neuro linguistic programming. I found the chapter on this topic very interesting and in fact, I am going to look for some more books on the topic. The chapter gave me a nice taste of NLP, but now I want more. One last thing I enjoyed about this book is that it gives very practical tips and techniques you can implement starting today to influence people you come in contact with on a day to day basis. All in all, good book.

About the Author
Dr. Seuss was born Theodor Geisel in Springfield, Massachusetts on March 2, 1904. After attending Dartmouth College and Oxford University, he began a career in advertising. His advertising cartoons, featuring Quick, Henry, the Flit!, appeared in several leading American magazines. Dr. Seuss's first children's book, And To Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street, hit the market in 1937, and the world of children's literature was changed forever! In 1957, Seuss's The Cat in the Hat became the prototype for one of Random House's best- selling series, Beginner Books. This popular series combined engaging stories with outrageous illustrations and playful sounds to teach basic reading skills. Brilliant, playful, and always respectful of children, Dr. Seuss charmed his way into the consciousness of four generations of youngsters and parents.  In the process, he helped kids learn to read.

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 1984 and three Academy Awards, Seuss was the author and illustrator of 44 children's books, some of which have been made into audiocassettes, animated television specials, and videos for children of all ages. Even after his death in 1991, Dr. Seuss continues to be the best-selling author of children's books in the world.

This insightful and thought-provoking work was written in a manner that reduces seemingly difficult concepts into easily digestible morsels. I recommend it for group studies, because the Questions For Further Consideration after each chapter provide for lively discussion and an exchange of ideas and information. The book was written by an educator and accurately hits the mark in teaching us how we learn, how our opinions are formed, and how we can further develop our thought process as we pursue a knowledge of God. This monograph examines the principles and applications of head-space analysis—a new and rapidly developing independent field in gas chromatographic analysis based on the use of "out of column" phase equilibria and partition coefficients in gas-liquid states. Different variations of quantitative analysis, including techniques for increasing analytical sensitivity and the calibration of chromatographs, are also presented. About the Author
Paula S. Rothenberg is a Senior Fellow at The Murphy Institute, City University of New York and Professor Emerita at William Patterson University of New Jersey.   From 1989 to 2006 she served as Director of The New Jersey Project on Inclusive Scholarship, Curriculum, and Teaching.   She is the author of several books including the autobiographical Invisible Privilege: A Memoir about Race, Class, and Gender.   With Worth Publishers she has auhored four titles--the best-selling Race, Class, and Gender; White Privilege; Beyond Borders; and her newest title What's the Problem? She is also co-editor of a number of anthologies including Creating and Inclusive College Curriculum:  A Teaching Sourcebook from the New Jersey Project and Feminist Frameworks: Alternative Theoretical Accounts of the Relations between Women and Men, one of the first women’s studies texts.   Her articles and essays appear in journals and anthologies across the disciplines and have been widely reprinted.    Her work was instrumental in the creation of women’s studies and multicultural studies as academic disciplines.

A good primer on whiteness

In White Privilege: Essential Readings on the Other Side of Race, Rothenberg has compiled and reduced some very important and complex discussions on whiteness from a variety of social contexts. In White Privilege, whiteness is traced from it's multiple origins and entry points giving a basic understanding on how whiteness developed as a social construct, what whiteness has meant to numerous people, how various Others have become white, and how whiteness is navigated and construed by people of color.
It should be noted that this is a primer - an entry-level text on whiteness. This book is highly recommended for those seeking a deeper understanding of what whiteness is, what it means, and to some degree what it costs. It's a valuable starting point with numerous references and further readings for those who seek a deeper, richer, understanding of whiteness.

Very interesting read and written very well.

This book helped open my mind to white privilege and racism from a systemic and structural view point that I had not thought of before. I really enjoyed the essays and the readings helped me think of things in a different frame of mind than before.

Essential reading

An essential text for understanding the important issue of race and racism in American society. Those seeing the text as "white bashing" are not only fundamentally missing the point of the book, but are also unwilling to accept that not everyone looks at the world through the same cultural and social perspectives.
