Rich in Historical Imagery

Thankfully, Osprey turned its Campaign series volume #122, Tannenberg 1410, over to Stephen Turnbull, rather than its household medieval specialist, Dr. David Nicolle. Turnbull, who is well known for his earlier works on Japanese Samurai, is able to deliver passion and humanity into his historical narrative, unlike the erudite but dull Nicolle. While Tannenberg might not have been one of the most critical battles in history, it was the kind of battle that created legends and historical traditions that greatly influenced future German-Slav relations. Turnbull's telling of this classic battle between the Polish-Lithuanian allies and the German Teutonic knights is first rate.
Tannenberg 1410 follows the standard Osprey Campaign series progression from introduction, through chronology, opposing commanders, opposing armies and opposing plans. The campaign narrative itself is 49 pages long. The aftermath section is fairly long at 12 pages, since the war continued for decades after Tannenberg. Turnbull uses five 2-D maps (Eastern Europe 1386, castles of the Teutonic order, the Polish invasion of Prussia, Kauernick to Tannenberg, Eastern Europe 1466) and three 3-D Birds Eye View maps on the Battle of Tannenberg itself. The three battle scenes by artist Richard Hook are quite good: the confrontation at the Kauernick ford, the Lithuanian charge, and the death of the Grand Master. Turnbull also provides notes on sources used and a visit to the modern-day battlefield.
The Teutonic Knights are rich in imagery, clad in white tunics with black crosses, ravaging Eastern Europe with fire and sword for generations. Although the Order, as it was called, was primarily German in origin, Turnbull notes that the organization was open to "guest crusaders." Indeed, the future English King Henry IV went in 1392 and brought many archers with him. Although the crusades in Eastern Europe were cast as a religious struggle of Christian knights against Pagans, the real motives were land and power. Turnbull notes that this hidden agenda was revealed in 1386 when the "conversion of Lithuania removed any justification for the continuance of the Teutonic Knights' aggressive expansion into Lithuania under the banner of a 'crusade'. The Order, however, had no intention of giving up the struggle." The pogroms and land-grabs by the Order in Eastern Europe might be viewed as the first instance of a Lebensraum tradition. Unfortunately for the Order, the marriage of Jadwiga and Jagiello led to a formal military alliance in 1401 between Poland and Lithuania, creating a major Slav alliance. Turnbull mentions the critical role of diplomacy and money in securing allies or inhibiting foes (Muscovy, Hungary, Bohemia, Moldavia), which demonstrates the complexity of this conflict. In August 1409, the Teutonic Knights declared war on Poland after making spurious claims against Polish Christianity (due to the presence of small numbers of Tartars in southern Poland, the Order claimed that Polish and Lithuanian Christianity was a sham), thus beginning the idiotic German tradition of attacking stronger coalitions.
Tannenberg was one of the bigger battles of the Middle Ages, with about 27,000 Teutonic troops versus 39,000 Poles/Lithuanians. Turnbull corrects some misconceptions about the battle, such as his estimate that only about 250 Teutonic troops were heavily armed, mounted knights (203 were killed in the battle). Poland's army was feudal in nature, but had few foot soldiers, regulars or mercenaries. The Order placed great emphasis on field artillery to disrupt the enemy but wet weather rendered their cannon ineffective. Tannenberg was a catastrophic defeat for the Order with fewer than 1,500 Teutonic troops escaping. However, victory did not come cheaply, since the Poles-Lithuanians suffered 30% losses themselves. Turnbull notes that Tannenberg mortally wounded the Teutonic Order and that it was unusual that the battle that decided a long war should come almost right at the beginning of the conflict.
If Tannenberg teaches us any lessons, it is that final victory can be very elusive even after a decisive battle. The Poles and Lithuanians failed to aggressively pursue the shattered Teutonic remnants and allowed the hero, Heinrich von Plauen to rally survivors and hold on to key castles. The Order also used its extensive diplomatic contacts to gain foreign support and this resiliency even allowed limited counteroffensives. For over fifty years, the mortally wounded Order fought a last ditch struggle against Poland and Lithuania, until their lands were finally absorbed in 1466. Turnbull concludes that, "the German-speaking peoples did not forget this reversal of fortunes, and three centuries later the "Partition of Prussia" was used as a justification for the Partition of Poland."

Osprey at its Superficial Best

The popular image of Teutonic knights is of them crashing into a lake of ice as brave Russian peasants watch on. Such is the continuing power of Eisenstadt's "Prince Nevsky." In reality, the battle of Lake Peipus was a rather small affair in the general history of the Teutonic knights drive to the East. Popular culture aside, the most important campaign in Tuetonic history is the one that reached its climax at the bloody battle of Tannenberg/Grunwald.

If you are looking for the definitve history of the Teutonic knights or even the Tannenberg Campaign this is not the book for you. Osprey's Campaign series limit themselves to around 95 pages and a follow an illustration rich general formula. For this one, Osprey pulled their Japanese history expert from their stable of military history writers. Although he lacks any specialized knowledge of this history, Turnbull does a good job of going through the secondary sources and retelling a highly readable account of the campaign that led to the downfall of the Tuetonic Order. Osprey Campagin Series books are what they are. It is just nice to read one that is well written.

Interesting and Concise History

Tannenberg 1410: Disaster for the Teutonic Knights by Stephen Turnbull is a concise but interesting history of a little known part of European History that had little immediate importance, but significant long term effect. In 1410 the Teutonic Knights of Prussia invaded Polish territory with the intent of expanding their empire. The Poles, along with their Lithuanian allies and a contingent of Czech mercenaries were able to rout the Knights, killing their Grand Master. Because of indecisive moves the Polish/Lithuanian allies they were unable to take advantage of their decisive victory; however, the victory weakened the Knights to such an extent that they eventually became inconsequential in European affairs.
In 96 pages, following the standard Ospery format, Turnbull concisely discusses the above in a well thought out and written manner. The book is well written and interesting to read. It is highly recommended for anyone who wants a taste of this part of European history.

A statistics textbook masquerading as a statistical bioinformatics textbook, forget about R

This is a statistics and probability textbook with some of the author's limited exposure to bioinformatics thrown in - the bioinformatics material is absurdly narrow in scope and most of the R code might as well be omitted it is so worthless.

The treatment of statistics is decent - a thorough overview of probability, distributions, inference, and Bayesian statistics is presented. There are so many summation and integral symbols in here it will make your eyes glaze over. At its core this might be a decent statistics textbook. Most of the examples seem fairly generic - such that biological concepts were placed in phrases where terms from the social sciences or engineering could have been used just as easily.

The R code is woefully repetitious, or in other cases so elementary it just takes up space. For example,

Perhaps due to the author's research interests this is a very microarray-centric textbook, and would have been more relevant 6 years ago. I wish authors would do a brief metasearch before sitting down to organize a textbook. There are probably 1000+ bioinformatics papers in 2009 dealing in the statistics of genome wide association analysis, and a handful of papers on MCMC or using the Metropolis Hastings algorithm. Yes parameter estimation deserves attention but not 100% weight. Protein microarrays, many of whose manufacturers have gone belly up, gets its own section for some reason. Next generation sequencing gets no exposure whatsoever (the copyright on this book is 2010 people!). Statistical genetics - QTLs, linkage disequilibrium - nothing. I'm pretty sure there is some sophisticated statistics involved in BLAST alignments and estimating homology but it is not mentioned here. The author instead focused on explaining stuff like "single fractal analysis" for binding kinetics (isn't that biochemistry?)

All the color figures are at the back, and consist of low-resolution gifs obviously taken from the web. The author did not contribute much in way of figures to aid understanding of posterior probability or Markov Chains lest it take space from the umpteenth formula or R "print" statement.

This hardcover is an expensive way to learn statistics and the author's myopic view of bioinformatics and weak code will not serve students well in their careers.

By the way, don't think I didn't notice the abrupt influx of suspicious one-off positive reviews in mid-February. Whoever orchestrated this scheme should bear in mind this kind of shameless shilling would be frowned upon by most universities.

a disappointing book

I would like to learn more of statistical bioinformatics and R programming and therefore expected this book to be published. Unfortunately, reading this book turned to be a disappointing experience. First of all, the presentation is pretty uneven: a lot of things are very basic, whereas some mathematics is much more difficult and requires good math training. Second, R programming is not at all interesting in this book and one cannot learn useful skills in this area. Another problem is that the book has a rather limited scope not highlighting many important areas of statistical bioinformatics of current interest. Finally, there are some factual mistakes in the theory, e.g. alternative hypothesis in ANOVA does not test that all the means are unequal, that is, no two or more means are equal to each other. To conclude, I appreciate that the author put a lot of work into this book, but the result still needs a lot to be useful and popular with bioinformatics students.

Useful book

I find this book useful as it takes broad view of bioinformatics applications and development of advanced methodology including Bayesian and Markov models. This book also includes variety of applications in different biomedical and genomic areas, including sequence analysis, location of recombinant breakpoints, complex designs, gene clustering and microarray.
The language of book is lucid and quite explains the basics of R code in reference to high-dimensional problems in the area of bioinformatics. I would like to thank the author for this wonderful book for beginners like me. I will recommend it.

Rodney Stark began his career as a newspaper reporter. Following a tour of duty in the U.S. Army, he received his Ph.D. from University of California, Berkeley. He left Berkeley to become Professor of Sociology and of Comparative Religion at the University of Washington. IN 2004 he joined the faculty of Baylor University where he services as Co-Director of the Institute of Studies of Religion. He has published 32 books and more than 160 scholarly articles.

Katie Corcoran is a Baylor University ISR Post-Doctoral Fellow joining ISR after receiving her Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Washington in 2012. Corcoran is a theoretical generalist who studies social groups and networks as links between macro-structures and micro-attitudes and behaviors. To te4st theoretical predictions, she draws on individual-level, cross-organizational, regional, and national data and uses advanced quantitative methodologies. In an ongoing collaboration, including a book under contract with Oxford University Press, Corcoran explores the importance of emotionally charged rituals and charismatic leaders for explaining the success and vitality of American mega-churches.

Timely and Authoritative

'Religious Hostility' is an academic study of religious-inspired violence that occurred during 2012. Its timeliness couldn't be better, and it is an invaluable antidote to those who would white-wash what is going on in the Middle East. Surveys (mostly conducted by Pew Research) and data-collection are the authors' tools to achieve objectivity. Readers will learn that Muslims present a serious problem world-wide, and that U.S. attempts to change the Middle-East have been laughable, at best. Concerns over Islamophobia often prevent officials from acknowledging attacks as religious motivated.

Egyptians are overwhelmingly opposed to secular rule - 67% want the country ruled entirely in accord with Sharia law, and only 2% want secular rule. (Saudi Arabians are 72% behind Sharia law, Afghans 67%, 65% for Pakistan and Jordan.) Almost 90% of Egyptians favor the death penalty for Muslims who convert to another religion (75% in Pakistan, 79% in Afghanistan, 83% in Jordan.) Many believe Sharia law should apply to all - not just Muslims; about 40% support 'honor killings' - with little difference between those with less than a high-school education and college graduates. Relations among various Muslim sects are so bitter that violence erupts when official repression weakens.

There are now about 1.2 billion active Christians, 1 billion Muslims, 700 million Hindus, 143 million Buddhists, 3.1 million Jews. In 2012, nearly all religious attacks involved Muslim attackers, the rest were almost all Buddhists, except for three by Christians. Deaths: 3,774 Muslims, 1,045 Christians, 110 Buddhists, 23 Jews, 21 Hindus, and 53 secular. Most of the 801 Muslim attacks took place in Pakistan (267), with Iraq (119), Nigeria (106), Thailand (52), Afghanistan (27), and Yemen (22) lagging behind.

Pakistan, Egypt, Kuwait, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Iran all have laws making blasphemy vs. Mohammed punishable by death.

The Boko Haram Muslim extremist sect forbids Western education - the 'Earth is round' is held contrary to Islamic teaching. The group is strongest in Nigeria and has killed 10,000 in the past decade. Praise for Hitler's treatment of the Jews is considered non-controversial in Muslim nations. Textbooks in Saudi Arabia are quite derogatory of Jews and Christians.

A 2011 Pew Research Survey found only 28% of Lebanese Muslims believed Arabs were behind 9/11, 9% of Turks. Almost half (43%) of Palestinians Muslims thought 9/11 was justified, 22% in Iraq, 21% in Saudi Arabia, 10% in Iran. Eight percent of American Muslims support suicide bombings in defense of Islam, about the same proportion as in France and Great Britain.

In Afghanistan, 60% of Muslims approve of honor killings, with 41% in Jordan, Lebanon, and Pakistan, 38% in Egypt, 37% in Palestine, and 18% in Turkey. Most Muslim nations are unwilling to prosecute these cases. In 2012 Pakistan, 913 are known to have been killed for such - 191 for marrying without family approval (Hindus and Sikhs also, but most by Muslims). The Ottoman Empire prohibited mechanical clocks and printing presses for centuries - the ways of Mohammed were seen as superior.

Religious police in Saudi Arabia enforce Sharia law on all. Burma is Buddhist and used its army to burn and drive out Christians and Muslims; it is illegal to import Bibles Qur'ans, or to rebuild churches or mosques.

Other than Burma, North Korea, Vietnam, and China - all of the most repressive religious nations are Muslim. Leading imams emphasize that democracy is another form of Western decadence and incompatible with Islam.

The French government has designated 173 religious groups (includes most Evangelical Protestants) as problematic - allowing extra taxes, employment discrimination. Belgium has 89.

Facts should still matter

Stark & Corcoran lay out ample evidence and prove how critically important religion is to diverse global populations in this age of advanced scientific and social engineering. They do as good a job as is possible analyzing the available data, which is necessarily incomplete. But, more importantly, they alert us to the need for real data, which in this case is staggering, to replace guesswork with facts. As religious hostility continues to determine a dominate human condition in this world, those looking for data to support claims of a peaceful Islam will be disappointed.

Data on worldwide religious hostility

This book should be of interest to people who want to better understand the worldwide religious hostility. This book takes the available data worldwide and presents the data and analysis of the data. It addresses the highest level of religion, and does not get down into the different sects of Christianity, or Islam etc.

Hated of the Jews is becoming a widespread problem in many countries around the world.

The biggest issue today in religious hostility is the Muslims killing Christians, or driving them out from their ancient homelands.

I recommend this book as having hard data on this issue, and not jut opinions as are frequently provided. This book is very informative, but is limited by he world wide data collected over the years. More data, and more detailed data would help.

About the Author
PATRICK MODIANO was born in 1945 in a suburb of Paris and grew up in various locations throughout France. In 1967, he published his first novel, La Place de l'étoile, to great acclaim. Since then, he has published over twenty novels—including the Goncourt Prize−winning Rue des boutiques obscures (translated as Missing Person), Dora Bruder, and Les Boulevards des ceintures (translated as Ring Roads)—as well as the memoir Un Pedigree and a children's book, Catherine Certitude. He collaborated with Louis Malle on the screenplay for the film Lacombe Lucien. In 2014, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. The Swedish Academy cited “the art of memory with which he has evoked the most ungraspable human destinies and uncovered the life-world of the Occupation,” calling him “a Marcel Proust of our time.”

MARK POLIZZOTTI has translated more than forty books from the French, including Patrick Modiano's Suspended Sentences, and is director of the publications program at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

And yet, it was no dream. Sometimes I catch myself saying those words in the street, as if hearing someone else’s voice. A toneless voice. Names come back to me, certain faces, certain details. No one left to talk with about it. One or two witnesses must still be alive. But they’ve probably forgotten the whole thing. And in the end, I wonder if there really were any witnesses.
     No, it wasn’t a dream. The proof is that I still have this black notebook full of my jottings. I need precise words in this haze, so I look in the dictionary. “Note: A short piece of writing that is used to help someone remember something.” The pages of my notebook contain a succession of names, phone numbers, appointments, and also short texts that might have something to do with literature. But what category should they be listed under? Private journal? Fragments of a memoir? And also hundreds of classified ads copied down from newspapers. Lost dogs. Furnished apartments. Help wanted and offered. Psychics.
     Among those masses of notes, some have stronger resonance than others. Especially when nothing disturbs the silence. The telephone stopped ringing long ago. And no one will knock at the door. They must think I’m dead. You are alone, concentrating, as if trying to capture Morse code signals being sent from far away by an unknown correspondent. Naturally, many signals are garbled, and no matter how hard you strain your ears they are lost forever. But a few names stand out clearly in the silence and on the empty page . . .
     Dannie, Paul Chastagnier, Aghamouri, Duwelz, Gérard Marciano, “Georges,” the Unic Hôtel, Rue du Montparnasse . . . As I remember it, I always felt on my guard in that neighborhood. The other day, I happened to walk through it. I had a strange sensation. Not that time had passed, but that another me, a twin, was prowling around there, a me who hadn’t aged, and who was still living — down to the smallest detail, and until the end of time — through what I had experienced over a very short period.
     What caused the unease I felt back then? Was it those few streets in the shadow of a railway station and a graveyard? Now they struck me as harmless. Their façades had changed color. Lighter. Nothing special. A neutral zone. Could I possibly have left behind a double, someone who would repeat each of my former movements, follow in my old footsteps, for all eternity? No, nothing remained of us here. Time had wiped the slate clean. The area was brand-new, sanitized, as if it had been rebuilt on the site of a condemned lot. And even though most of the buildings were still the same, they made you feel as if you were looking at a taxidermied dog, a dog you had once owned, that you had loved when it was alive.
     That Sunday afternoon, on my walk, I tried to recall what was written in the black notebook, which I regretted not having with me. Times of appointments with Dannie. The telephone number of the Unic Hôtel. The names of the people I met there. Chastagnier, Duwelz, Gérard Marciano. Aghamouri’s number at the Moroccan Pavilion at the Cité Universitaire. Short descriptions of different areas in that neighborhood, for a piece I planned to call “L’Arrière-Montparnasse,” until I discovered thirty years later that the title had already been used by a certain Oser Warszawski.
     One late Sunday afternoon in October, then, my footsteps had led me to that neighborhood, which I would have avoided any other day of the week. No, it wasn’t really a pilgrimage. But Sundays, especially in late afternoon, if you are alone, open a breach in time. You need only slip into it. A stuffed dog that you loved when it was alive. The moment I walked past the large, dirty, white-and-beige building at 11 Rue d’Odessa — I was on the opposite sidewalk, the one on the right — I felt something click, the slight dizziness that seizes you whenever time splits open. I stood frozen, staring at the façades that enclosed the small courtyard. That was where Paul Chastagnier always used to park his car when he lived in a room at the Unic Hôtel, on Rue du Montparnasse. One evening, I had asked why he didn’t just leave the car in front of the hotel. He had given me a guilty half-smile and answered with a shrug, “As a precaution . . .”
     A red Lancia. It could easily draw attention. But then, if he wanted to remain invisible, why on earth choose that color and make of car? Besides, he had said, a friend of his lived in this building on Rue d’Odessa and he often lent him the car. Yes, that’s why it was parked there.
     “As a precaution,” he had said. I soon realized that this man, in his forties, dark-haired, always immaculately dressed in a gray suit and navy-blue overcoat, did not have any particular profession. I heard him make phone calls at the Unic Hôtel, but the wall was too thick for me to follow the conversation. Only the sound of his voice reached me: deep, sometimes sharp. Long pauses. I had gotten to know this Chastagnier at the Unic Hôtel, along with several others I met in the same establishment: Gérard Marciano, Duwelz, whose first name I don’t recall . . . Their outlines have grown hazy with time, their voices inaudible. Paul Chastagnier stands out more clearly because of the colors: black hair, navy-blue overcoat, red car. I imagine he served time in prison, like Duwelz, and like Marciano. He was the oldest of the bunch, and he has surely died since then. He got up late and held his appointments far away from there, in the southern part of town, that hinterland around the old freight depot, where I, too, knew the local street names: Falguière, Alleray, and, a bit farther along, Rue des Favorites . . . Empty cafés that he sometimes took me to, where he probably thought no one could find him. I never dared ask if he was officially persona non grata in Paris, though the idea crossed my mind. But then, why would he park his red car in front of those cafés? Wouldn’t it have been more prudent, more discreet, just to walk? At the time, I often wandered around that neighborhood that they were beginning to tear down, past empty lots, squat buildings with bricked-in windows, sections of pavement showing through heaps of rubble, as if after a bombardment. And that red car parked there, its smell of leather, that vivid stain that brings back memories . . . Memories? No. That Sunday evening, I ended up convincing myself that time stands still, and that if I truly slipped into the breach I would find all of it there, intact. First and foremost, that red car. I decided to walk to Rue Vandamme. There was a café there that Paul Chastagnier had brought me to, where our conversation had taken a more personal turn. I had even sensed he was on the verge of opening up to me. He had proposed, indirectly, that I “work” for him. I had remained evasive. He hadn’t insisted. I was very young but very distrustful. Later, I had gone back to that café with Dannie.
     That Sunday, it was almost dark by the time I arrived at Avenue du Maine, and I walked alongside the tall new buildings on the even-numbered side. They formed a rectilinear façade. Not a single light in the windows. No, it hadn’t been a dream. Rue Vandamme used to open off from the avenue at around that spot, but this evening the façades were smooth, compact, offering not the slightest vista. I had to face the facts: Rue Vandamme no longer existed.
     I went through the glass door of one of those buildings at the approximate place where we used to turn onto Rue Vandamme. Fluorescent lights. A long, wide corridor lined with glass walls, behind which lay suites of offices. Perhaps a section of Rue Vandamme still remained, surrounded by the mass of new construction. The thought made me break into nervous laughter. I continued to follow the corridor with its glass doors. I couldn’t see the end of it and the fluorescents made me blink. I thought that maybe the corridor simply followed the former path of Rue Vandamme. I closed my eyes.

too late the mystery

The Black Notebook is a compilation of scenes more in common with a sketch pad than the traditional mystery story. imagine the black letters on the page transformed into sketches in ink or charcoal of wet black streets at night, a car ride at night with the lights off, rooms with black curtains at windows, a man with a black briefcase.

these are scenes from the past of jean, a writer little of whom little is known. the past, itself is a black hole, accessible through his memory and, where his memory fails, he must rely on what he wrote in his notebook.

sadly lacking from jean’s memories is passion describing a romance or notes of unrequited love. as he recalls accompanying dannie, if that was her name, from place to place, he would write some incidental detail in his black notebook, the red lancia, the names on shop signs, even baudelaire’s mistress took up more space in his notebook than the woman of mystery at his side.

decades after his time with dannie, a chance encounter with a detective adds more detail to events surrounding his odd relationship with dannie, but not enough toward putting the story in order.

for the detective, the past is past, and for jean the events of the past appear to be diversions of memory of a lonely man searching for meaning in a past experience involving a woman while ignoring the black hole of a more total kind of forgetfulness, the oblivion of death.

modiano conveys the impression that the detective story has been done a thousand times before and isn’t worth doing again, that reader can assemble a story from the given sketches, by filling in the details, if the reader wants, that more important than a story is a mood, a sensibility of mysteries deeper than found in the past. modiano doesn’t quite make the journey to the metaphysical realm worthwhile.

A Noir Modiano--so what's new?

Readers of Patrick Modiano's novels (I have read 12 of them) will become accustomed to encountering certain patterns in his narratives, as well as familiar character types, and the reaction of such readers may well depend on their tolerance for a writer's fascination with exploring subtle variations on those patterns: a narrator who tries to reconstruct his memories of past experiences, maybe having been prompted by an encounter with an object or person or place that triggers very partial, sometimes inaccurate memories that gradually are clarified, corrected, subverted, or otherwise changed as the narrator, often reluctantly, follows whatever clues may be uncovered to provide the "truth" about the past. In this case, with something of a "film noir" atmosphere that is also a familiar part of the range of patterns Modiano uses, the narrator has a notebook containing more or less random or fragmentary jottings from a period in his past when he was "involved" with a young woman and a group of more or less suspicious, possibly menacing, associates. The woman is reputed to have a dangerous past, having been implicated in an event or action of some kind that could not only put her in great danger, but would also endanger anyone closely associated with her.

Under the circumstances, the narrator slinks about in Paris during the earlier period of his association with her, but we are "in the present" with that same narrator, as he samples bits and pieces of the materials in the notebook--names, addresses, images of places, texts from signs or graffiti that he copied during his wanderings with the young woman, and so on. He returns to seek the places he has written about, to recollect the nature of the young woman. His quest provides much more confusion and uncertainty than he would like, but also forces him to recognize aspects of his own involvement and behavior that he might wish he had not remembered.

Modiano's narrator frequently throws indications of uncertainty, even outright questions about the possibility of knowing what has happened, as opposed to what might be false memories or even fantasies, and his character keeps returning to the question--did this, could this, have happened. And one of the unsettling answers to this question is "For me, there never has been a present or a past. Everything blends together, as in that empty room where, every night, a light shines." Earlier, he refers to "the slight dizziness that seizes you whenever time splits open," and later, as he observes two men looking out a window toward where he is standing, but they do not see him: "Perhaps the glass was opaque from inside, like a one-way mirror. Or else, very simply, dozens and dozens of years stood between us; they remained frozen in the past, in the middle of that hotel lobby and we no longer lived, they and I, in the same space of time."

It is that kind of disruption of assumptions about "reality," about whether we are in a dream or merely imagining a scene that may have happened, but that is not "real" now, that Modiano often develops to send the reader into deeper questions about the nature of identity (very fluid from the narrator's point of view) and even the existence of certainly about where one is. This narrator's notebook, for example, leads him to seek places in Paris where he has lived or visited friends or regularly stopped for a coffee or meal, only to find that the places he "remembers" have been obliterated, with shiny new multistory buildings constructed in their places. This is not an uncommon experience for walkers in modern cities, of course, but the narrator's commitment to finding the "original" and to exploring even much older associations (he regularly refers to places where Baudelaire and his mistress had lived, for example), constantly raises the questions about the nature of memory, of time past, of the ways in which solidity and fluidity oscillate and invade each others spaces. And, as one of the other characters says to the narrator, Jean, "In the end, you can never play both sides," and the issue is both one of memory and of experience, of physical presence or absence, or of morality.

Modiano's novels are sometimes criticized for being so often very similar to others--even to the extent of certain characters from one novel reappearing in a later narrative, if only fleetingly. I can understand the frustration this causes, but for me, it is part of the fascination, and I will continue to read Modiano whenever there is a new work (or even the impulse to re-read an old one), with fascination and pleasure.

More good stuff by May

I have read two other books by Rollo May, Addiction and Grace and The Springs of Creative Living (not an easy book to find though). May is the best author I've found so far that helps me spiritually. The only book that compares is "The People of the Lie" by Scott Peck. I am a new reader though, so I'm still searching. I find this book spiritually nourishing. It helps me live my life better by applying some of his principles. May keeps pointing out that I'm the problem and not others. How can I keep improving myself? May doesn't write fluff. He's to the point and practical. I'd recommend any of the three May books I've mentioned. They are all equally enjoyable.

While the book is available free on line I prefer to hold it, underline it and carry it around. This is an introduction to the fact that groups on earth are influenced by the movements of the planets. While this is generally disregarded by most investors and traders. All who disregard it have not studied the subject. Even those that have studied the subject get it wrong as they do not have a background in trading. Those that follow Elliot wave will be surprised to see that there is a relationship with the planets. The greatest trader in history was an astrologer. W D Gann and his primary method of long term forcasting was astrology.

Louise McWhirter' s Little Gem

Without doubt this contribution to the subject of Financial Astrology is a must have. Written over a 7 year period and released in 1938 Louise McWhirter has produced an exceptionally well written treatise on her findings and for what has been recognised as the most accurate stock market forecasting system ever devised/discovered.

This publication is a must have for any serious student of Financial Astrology.

There are two dimensions to trading, Price which is expressed vertically in a market chart, and Time which is the horizontal axis. McWhirter's work deals not only with the general waveform highs and lows of Price but tells you where these highs and lows will manifest in Time. This book is most useful for people wanting to know from when the markets will typically manifest their highs and lows, or those waiting for the right time to buy or sell real estate. If you're in your 20'sor 30's and beginning to invest for retirement or plan for buying a home, this is a book that gives you an advantage, a far better shot at retiring in your 60's without counting on Social Security being there as your primary income.

McWhirter's work dates back to the 1930's and continues to show how financial market cycles continue relatively exclusive from the government and the Federal Reserve. The author doesn't embellish or obfuscate, or promote a political point of like many other books by Financial Astrologers - quite the opposite. She illustrates how business cycles operate regardless of who occupies the White House. This is truly useful, information you can summarize while reading into a few handwritten pages, ready for reference in trading. Occam's Razor applies here, as this elegantly simple explanation of astronomical factors and their effect on the markets continues as truth. I know this as I've been a Financial Astrologer for 15 years, and this book has proven itself. It is a basic part of my trading strategy.

So, what will the stock market do between now and 2020? I recommend buying this book and learn for yourself. If you're not an astrologer, you'll need to buy at least one more book what's known as an Geocentric Ephemeris so you can look up in the tables where the planets and the Moon's Node are located in the calendar. I also highly recommend you have an online trading account and know how to read basic price charts.

Overused trope fails to distinguish itself

Perhaps this story was a new concept when it was written, but, in 2015, the "possessed painting" trope is so well-known that this audiobook will be a complete bore to most readers. Simple story: Man buys disturbing painting, painting changes whenever he's not looking, painting does bad things, painting seems to be getting closer to him.

The audio quality is fine--no insult in this review is to Saunders--but the story concept is just overdone.
