Following the author's earlier book on Athenian banking, this work analyzes erotic business at Athens in the context of the Athenian economy. For the Athenians, the social acceptability and moral standing of human labor was largely determined by the conditions under which work was performed. Pursued in a context characteristic of servile endeavor, prostitution--like all forms of slave labor--was contemptible. Pursued under conditions appropriate to non-servile endeavor, prostitution--like all forms of free labor--was not violative of Athenian work ethics. As a mercantile activity, however, prostitution was not untouched by Athenian antagonism toward commercial and manual pursuits; as the "business of sex," prostitution further evoked negativity from segments of Greek opinion uncomfortable with any form of carnality. Yet ancient sources also adumbrate another view, in which the sale of sex, lawful and indeed pervasive at Athens, is presented alluringly.

In a book that will be of interest to all students of sex and gender, to economic, legal and social historians, and to classicists, the author explores the high compensation earned by female sexual entrepreneurs who often controlled prostitutional businesses that were perpetuated from generation to generation on a matrilineal basis, and that benefitted from legislative restrictions on pimping. The author juxtaposes the widespread practice of "prostitution pursuant to written contract" with legislation targeting male prostitutes functioning as governmental leaders, and explores the seemingly contradictory phenomena of extensive sexual exploitation of slave prostitutes (male and female) coexisting with Athenian society's pride in its legislative protection of slaves and minors against sexual outrage.

About the Author
Syed Ali Ashter is a Development Engineer at EMD Millipore Corporation, developing medical devices from concept to commercialization, and in process development. He performed post-doctoral research on next generation formable films for the automotive industry at McMaster University, and received his Ph.D. in 2008 in Plastics Engineering from University of Massachusetts Lowell. He has been on the Board of Directors of the Medical Plastics division of the Society of Plastics Engineers since 2012. About the Author
Pamela Goyan Kittler has an MS in Nutritional Science from San Jose State University with an emphasis in nutrition education and currently works as a cultural nutritionist. She is the author of three undergraduate textbooks, has published numerous articles in professional journals and newsletters, and frequently presents lectures and workshops on topics of food and culture.

Dr. Sucher received her bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of California and her ScD from Boston University Medical Center in Nutritional Science. She recently retired from San Jose State University, where she taught medical nutrition therapy and was the dietetic internship director for 20 years. in addition to her research interest in nutrition therapy, she is also a recognized authority on how diet, health, and disease are affected by culture/ethnicity and religion. Dr. Sucher has published newsletters, numerous articles, and textbooks on this subject. If you are looking for a resource on food and culture look no further! Food and Culture by Pamela Goyan Kittler and Kathryn P. Sucher sets the gold standard.

The book contains excellent background information beginning with an overview of how food and culture relate to each other, followed by chapters on traditional health beliefs and practices, food and religion, and intercultural communication.

Following these rich and fascinating foundation chapters, the book devotes separate chapters to specific cultural groups. In each of these chapters, the specific group's history in the US. and their worldview (including religion and family) are presented. Also included are each cultural group's common foods and ingredients, typical meal patterns, and foods served on festive occasions. Additionally, the meaning of what culturally specific foods mean to the group and therapeutic beliefs and practices surrounding their consumption are included. Each chapter ends with how the group has adapted its food habits in the US and the clinical implications for dietitians and other healthcare workers who work with members of the group.

Increasing cultural competence is the cornerstone of this extraordinary book. Thus, it is much more than a cultural nutrition textbook. Anyone who works with culturally diverse groups will find the book as an invaluable resource, including nurses, physicians, dietitians, nutritionists, public health professionals, food service professionals, health educators, teachers, and diversity trainers. In fact, Food and Culture is a fascinating read for the general public interested in why different groups eat different foods.

I purchased this book for a class I am taking called Multicultural Food Habits. I am very much enjoying the textbook. The theories, etc. are written in such a way that it makes the reading very interesting. I highly recommend it. Also, for people who do travel globally, it is a great resource for foods from various cultures, with an extensive glossary.

Solid Flask Guide For Experienced Users

This is a nice book for taking your Flask programming to the next level. It is meant for a programmer who is already working with Flask as it does not cover much introductory information.

I am working with Flask currently and there were a couple examples in the early chapters that helped me a lot. The explanations are generally pretty clear, but in some cases the author assumes the reader knows a lot.

One thing that annoyed me was the author mentioned this was the most comprehensive and best Flask book available. There's a couple other Flask books out there I have not checked out yet, but I'd prefer an author to acknowledge others in the field rather than assuming their book is hands down the best.

Some of the chapters felt a bit out of order to me. The goal of the book is to create a blogging platform with Flask but the 2nd chapter goes very deep into creating Models with SQLAlchemy. A lot of the chapters just felt in random order, and I would have liked to seen a more ground up approach to building the blogging platform.

Overall this is a good book for learning Flask. There is a lot of relevant information and you cannot go wrong buying this book if you want to improve your skills with Flask.

Mastering Flask covers all the topics needed to a create web site using Flask Web Framework. However, knowledge of the in and outs of web development is required.

The reader will need to know how to join the topics presented in the book to build a functional application. The source code provided by the author should help.The reader should have some experience beforehand in building an application using the Flask web framework or some other framework. Also, the explanation of some of the topics are not covered in depths.

The books covers advance topics, like NoSQL using MongoDB and Celery. These advances topics are not required to build a Web Application, but are essential to build modern web application that requires high performance and scalability.

The Secure Your App, NoSQL and Celery topics makes the book a worth while investment.

There is more than enough information in this book to the get you started using the Flask Web Framework, but it should not be only your reference.

Review of Mastering Flask

This is a book for Python programmers that want to include Flask in their applications. It covers everything from start to finish. The start it shows how to obtain and install Flask and at the end it tells how to deploy the application on your own server, on Heroku and on Amazon web services. In between it tells about databases, explaining the difference between RDBMS and NoSQL databases and which should be used depending on the application. It talks about SQLAlchemy, which is used for connecting to the database. It also presents information on using Jinja to create the user views. It lists a few of the more popular Flask extensions and how to create your own.

All in all I would recommend this book.

Not your parent's Taiji book.

"I have just enough background to be slightly dangerous, in a dinky kind of way. I'm like a cornered squirrel in your livingroom. You aren't afraid of it exactly, but you don't especially look forward to dealing with it..." - Scott Meredith - from the opening of his new book, JUICE: Radical TAIJI Energetics.

Thus from the very beginning, before he even gets to the descriptions of energy, and exercises, the reader knows they are dealing with a madman. And like all the best mad men, Scott is 100 percent honest about what he writes. The treasure of this book is HOW it is written as much as WHAT is written. Unlike so many books on this topic, mr. Meredith endeavors to explain, not veil. He writes as if he is sitting across the table from the reader, telling stories - explaining - what his experience is - and how it came about. He is not the professor, or the guru, speaking obscure Rocket Surgery to a confused and hopeful accolyte - no, JUICE is far worse - It's the guy standing next to you, covered in dirt, smiling, asking "do you want this? Cuz, if you do, yoo might get a little dirty..."
the read is exciting and level and what is absolute best is the vigor to EXPLAIN. There is nothing to translate or interpret. In parts, mr. Meredith has already done that for the reader. He has taken his metaphoric wire cutters and stripped bare the live wire that is TAIJI energetics and here, he tells us exactly how he did it.
I guess the readers milage will vary based on the desire to learn and the faith that at the end of the form; at the end of hours of standing on one leg, wondering how burning quads will translate into that feather touch that knocks them sideways, that the outcome will be the pure, simple pleasure of coursing energy.
There is no book like this - there is no book that endeavors to unlock the vague concept of "the internal arts" - in such a straighforward and detailed way. This book is not the revolution, but it points to the revolution. If you read this book, and you focus on the exercises herein, your taiji will change, that's all it promises, and that's all it delivers.

The Best Book on Taiji I've Read, and I've Read Many

I started studying this art in the late 1980s in Taiwan, then continued when I got home, and have been practicing ever since, with many lapses. I have read at least a dozen books on taiji, probably more. Juice is the first book I've read to deal directly, concretely, with the art's energetics, the patterns of energy flow, and energy cultivation. The author has a Ph.D from MIT, and it shows. His explanations are free of the New Agey "let your qi flow!" feel good stuff that's useless. On the other hand, he eschews the trend to dismiss all discussion of qi in taiji in favor of pure physics and body mechanics. In very detailed language he explains how to get the qi (chi) into your taiji through correct use of the form, rather than auxiliary nei kung/qigong. I learned a great deal in the week that I've been working with the book, and can feel the results. But this is experiential. You can debate it, you can agree or challenge it, but you have to give it a try and see if you can feel it. I would go as far as to say it's the most important book on taiji I've read, and I don't know the author, I'm not a shill, just another taiji nut.

Right away this book gets special mention for being one of the better-written books on martial arts out there. The author's style is witty and clever, but never annoying or abrasive. He manages to use clear, breezy language to probe very deep depths into explaining the internal side of Taijiquan -- an art that despite its large international popularity, is still rarely understood (and often done incorrectly) with only a small handful of living masters.

Take note: this book is FUN to read. Many martial arts books can be very dry, like academic history tomes or political memoirs, or else delve too much into personal fantasy or escapist romance. This martial arts book is original, creative, and enjoyable. It references the typical attitudes of hip modern brand marketing, martial arts mysticism and physical pragmatism, but with a knowing wink on top of real substance.

That being said, the book is much more than clever and accessible writing. Substantially, this book is the one to fill in all the missing gaps in your Taijiquan energy work. It may just be a preview for the beginner, but for the intermediate or advanced Taijiquan student, this is a required manual that will boost your internal practice rapidly. In years of serious Taijiquan training, I have never encountered such accessible instructions on using qi (at least within the Taijiquan system itself, there are certainly other systems out there). It is worth the cover price for some of the central chapters alone.

But there's actually more to the package. The author is highly fluent/literate in both Chinese and Japanese,
uses his own translations, and even includes as an appendix, a few martial arts treatises on energy from both Chinese and Japanese masters from the 19th and 20th centuries. Some of this stuff I have never seen in English outside of the author's work, and I'm no slouch on the subject. To say the least, this is an awesome addition to what is already a great Taijiquan/martial arts book.

The ONLY thing in the whole book I wondered about, is why Taijiquan is not strongly conveyed as a martial art, especially given Yang Lu-chan's history as a military instructor, and Taijiquan as a military art. I believe there's a good chance that Taijiquan's waning overall quality around the world is that most people do not practice it in that classical sense. That being said, I understand that it is really besides the point of this work, and whether you are a Taijiquan martial artist or a Taijiquan meditative or health enthusiast, the book's content is of serious benefit.

Let me conclude by saying I've met the author briefly and can attest to his high skill level. I am not a student of his, nor do I have anything to gain from recommending his book to others. Yet this is good stuff. It does have the JUICE. It's a focused transmission for practiced Taijiquan players, written by someone who is extremely skilled at Taijiquan, fluent in English, Chinese and Japanese, and on top of all that -- is an intelligent, humorous writer. If you've been doing Taijiquan or martial arts for a while, this is some high culture right here.

My name is Helen. I am from US. I was upset that I couldn't get the winner's factory book since I was not in india. But when I searched in amazon I was like "praise God." My only regret is not getting this book before. I love this book so much. It is so inspiring and I learned so much from it. I am looking forward to buy "my prayer's diary," but I noticed in kindle I can only highlight and can't write notes. If anyone else is able to make notes on kindle can you tell me how can I make notes on it? Thank you so much brother Damien for writing this book. About the Author

Theresa Stack is an Associate Professor with MT Tech, she is a Certified Professional Ergonomist and a Certified Safety Professional. Theresa has over nineteen years of professional hands-on experience in occupational safety, health and ergonomics. Theresa provided technical program management and abatement consultation support to the DoN for twelve years. Theresa continues to instruct for various universities and consult.

Lee T. Ostrom, PhD, has worked in the fields of risk assessment, industrial safety, ergonomics, and human factors for over thirty-five years. A Certified Professional Ergonomist and Certified Safety Professional, he has been an Associate Dean and Academic Director and Full Professor University of Idaho, Idaho Falls. He has authored or co-authored two other books on ergonomic and risk topics and has authored over 75 papers and conference proceedings.

Cheryl A. Wilhelmsen, PhD, is an assistant clinical professor at the University of Idaho, Idaho Falls. She has been the director of the Industrial Technology BS degree program. She has also taught for APUS/AMU and consults with NASA Ames in the area of aviation inspection. In her thirty year career, she has conducted hundreds of ergonomic assessments and risk assessments from offices to nuclear hot cells.
